Hands-on spaces for children and their adults

I have a keen interest in developing content for hands-on spaces within cultural venues. Prior to the consultancy work I describe in the case studies below, I was part of the start-up team at the Discover Story Centre in London which provides creative and immersive exhibitions to promote creative literacy for children aged one to11. I subsequently became Executive Director at Playeum's Children's Centre for Creativity in Singapore, during which time I oversaw five successful hands-on exhibitions which focussed specifically on open-ended play. I have since developed content for hands-on galleries both within the UK and for projects in China. The provision of playful spaces is becoming increasingly important for cultural venues in engaging and sustaining the family audience. Hands-on spaces can stand alone, offering children an enjoyable and positive association with a venue, and they can also provide a valuable incentive for children to explore additional, different content within the site. I have particular experience in developing play spaces that complement different themes and collections, and I would be delighted to discuss the opportunities for a play-based space at your venue. Please do contact me for an informal discussion if this is of interest.
